Hi, I'm Austin!
My name is Austin Hirsh and I am the founder of The 2050 Company. I grew up in Gig Harbor, Washington, which in my biased opinion is the epicenter of all outdoor activities. I love hiking, camping, and wake boarding in the summer and escaping the rain to ski in the winter. Recently, I have become more and more startled by the scientific projections concerning the future of our planet and the ecosystems I have grown up in. As a current graduate student in the M.S. in Entrepreneurship program at the University of Washington Foster School of Business, I have realized that I am uniquely suited to make at least a small contribution in the efforts to ensure a thriving future for our planet. This is how The 2050 Company came to be.
I originally launched The 2050 Company as "Re:fresh Smoothies" when I was studying Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics at the University of San Diego. I entered Re:fresh Smoothies into the 2019 Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge, a student pitch competition for socially-focused ventures. I won first place in the university level of the competition and went on to compete against student teams from all around the world in the Global Finals, where I placed in the Top 10. I was inspired by the passionate student entrepreneurs I met through this competition, and decided to commit all of my free time to making Re:fresh Smoothies a reality.
For the past year, I have been working on this venture while simultaneously gaining vital business skills at the University of Washington. I have put together a great team of like-minded, passionate, and highly-skilled UW students to help get The 2050 Smoothie off the ground. In December we changed the venture's name to The 2050 Company, further aligning the company's brand with its mission of creating "food for the future". The 2050 Company LLC was officially established on January 1, 2020, exactly 30 years before our namesake year. On May 2, 2020 we launched out first Virtual Pop-Up Event, selling thousands of smoothies in just 20 hours and 50 minutes, and donating hundreds more to healthcare workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis.
